ICDE Prizes for Innovation and Best Practice 2015 

At the closing ceremony of the 26th ICDE World Conference at Sun City in South Africa on 16 October, five papers were awarded the ICDE Prize for Innovation and Best Practice in Open, Distance, Flexible, Online Education and E-learning.

ICDE announces new Board of Trustees

ICDE is pleased to announce that the new Board of Trustees have been elected.

While the Executive Committee leads ICDE and is responsible for making policy decisions in accordance with ICDE’s mission and constitution, the Board of Trustees advises the Executive Committee, and monitors the conduct of the Secretary General, the President and members of the Executive Committee and is composed of five members who aim to reflect the diversity of the ICDE membership culturally, linguistically and geographically, as well as in the expertise of its members.

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) of which ICDE is an affiliated member, is a regional intergovernmental organization established in 1965 among governments of Southeast Asian countries to promote regional cooperation in education, science and culture in the region.


ICDE Secretary General, presented on the global challenges on the occasion of the signing of an agreement to give life to the ‘Academy of Civilizations’

The agreement is based on an agreement between a network of traditional and distance universities of the whole world to realize a common platform spreading new educational and cultural strategies.

ICDE Secretary General provides insight on 'Crossing the digital flow' at the IAU conference in Bangkok

The story of ' Crossing the digital flow' was presented by ICDE Secretary General and was discussed with university leaders at the International Association for Universities´ Conference in Bangkok. After having introduced technologies relevant for education that are flowing into society, their opportunities and challenges, the presentation goes on to discuss trends in the era of digitalisation and how to meet with them, in particular trends in online, open and flexible higher education. A stepwise approach together with knowledge sharing and peer learning is advised.

Siberia is melting for Open Education

This year, Siberia has experienced unique progress. In Yakutsk, the capital of the Republic of Sakha (formerly called Yakutia) and the only city worldwide built on permafrost, the government was launching a hot season: The International Lensky Education Forum was heating the debate about open education. The forum in cooperation with UNESCO was organized for the first time and concluded one year of first innovative activities with a series of events. "We appreciate the strong support of the Yakutian government for open education fully conforming with UNESCO's objective", said Dr. David Atchoarena, UNESCO Director for Policies and Lifelong Learning Systems.

LangOER Webinar: Open Education: Promoting Diversity for European Languages – Consultation on policy recommendations

The International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) is seeking expressions of interest for hosting the 2018 ICDE Presidents’ Summit.

A sharp leadership focus is wanted for the 2018 Summit.

ICDE takes account of the geographical balance of its members when deciding upon the location of its conferences as well as ease of access. For the 2018 ICDE Presidents’ Summit bids from ICDE members in South America will have priority, with Arab states and Europe given second priority.


Assisting increasing demands on Distance Education in Latin America with a wider remote laboratories network based on VISIR

A number of Higher Education Institutions in Latin America (LA) are currently installing a remote laboratory named Virtual Instrument System in Reality (VISIR), with the assistance of European partners that have been using it for more than 5 years, expanding the present excellence network of users of VISIR worldwide, under the support and co-financing of the European Union Erasmus Plus Program.

The 8 virtual thematic universities in France, (Universités Numériques Thématiques, UNT), supported by the French government, have built up an extensive collection of Open Educational Resources (OER). Through more than 10 years, about 33,000 quality assured open licensed educational resources, have been developed and are now made available by an open search engine.

Universitas Terbuka is Awarded the Certificate of Quality from ICDE

The open and distance education system implemented by Universitas Terbuka (UT), has been acknowledge to meet the international standard of good practice for open and distance education by receiving the ICDE Quality Certificate. The Certificate was awarded by Dr. Belinda Tynan, one of the Executive Committees, on behalf of ICDE, on September 5, 2016, during the celebration of Universitas Terbuka's 32 years anniversary that took place at the Universitas Terbuka Convention Center (UTCC). UT Rector, Prof. Tian Belawati received the certificate in the ceremony, witnessed by invited guests, representatives of the government, the Board of Supervisors, the former rector and former officials, business partners, and the entire staff of UT.


Regional Consultations on Open Educational Resources Announced

The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) is conducting six Regional Consultations around the world in the lead up to the 2nd World Open Educational Resources (OER) Congress, scheduled to be held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 18 to 20 September 2017. The consultations are being held in partnership with UNESCO, Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO and UNESCO Chair on Open Technologies for OER and Open Learning (Jožef Stefan Institute, Slovenia), and with the generous support of The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
