The 2016 celebration of International Mother Language Day (IMLD) will take place on 22 February 2016 in Room IV from 10 am to 1 pm at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.

The theme for 2016 is Quality Education, Language of instruction and learning outcomes. On this Day, UNESCO will reiterate the importance of using appropriate languages of instruction, usually mother tongues, in early years of schooling. Formal and non-formal education systems should deliver quality education for all learners by taking a bilingual approach based on mother tongues. To showcase the importance of languages of instruction, the UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report developed the “If you don’t understand how can you learn?” Policy Paper, which will be launched at the IMLD opening ceremony.
