AAOU Web-conference: Machine Learning for Human Learning: LMS Data Matters!

The University of Texas at Arlington is moving forward in the field of learning analytics, through “big data” models based on machine learning. UTA approaches the issue of learning analytics campus-wide in a way which integrates our newly-formed operational unit, University Analytics, with an internationally-recognized research lab, the Learning Innovation and Networked Knowledge (LINK) facility.

Utilizing data from the student information system as well as the campus LMS, faculty researchers and student support staff are building increasingly complex models of student engagement and student success. And early modeling in this area has underscored the importance of LMS data in particular—showing that, even for primarily on-campus learners, rich data from the learning management system is critical to any complex understanding of the learner in higher education today.
