Governance
New Caledonia has a unique status in that it is both a French Territory under the authority of the 1958 French Constitution
and has a functioning parliamentary system. The unicameral legislature is made up of 54 elected representatives who serve
five year terms. Three senators are elected from the legislature, two to represent the region in the French National Assembly
and the other in the French Senate. The territory is divided into three regions: North Province, South Province and The Loyalty
Islands. All adult nationals over 18 years of age are entitled to vote in Territorial and National Elections.
