New ICDE President elected
Published 07.03.12Tian Belawati, Rector of Universitas Terbuka, Indonesia was unanimously elected President of the ICDE Executive Committee at its recent constitutive meeting held in Oslo, Norway. Professor Belawati, who was the driving force behind the 24th ICDE World Conference last year, will serve as President until 2015.
ICDE explores partnership with SEAMEO
Published 23.03.12Tian Belawati represented the Executive Committee of ICDE at the 34th Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) High Official Meeting held in Bangkok, Thailand in January 2012. Professor Belawati presented a working paper on developments and trends in higher education and the uptake of distance and online learning, and a proposal for partnership with the organization.
ODL online debate concludes
Published 10.02.12Presentations from Russia and China conclude the ICDE convened online discussion on open and distance learning on the UNESCO/ World Bank Group infoDev sponsored Educational Technology Debate portal. The debate has so far attracted over 6,300 unique visitors.
Strategies for quality higher education in an increasingly more open and online world
Published 27.01.12ICDE arranged a seminar in Oslo, Norway, at the end of February for the leadership of Norwegian institutions to meet with ICDE Executive Committee members and other ICDE members. The event sought to bring together perspectives on open, distance and online learning from around the world with those from Norway, with emphasis on leadership, strategies and organization at the intersection of campus-based and distance education.
Quality Assurance Toolkit for non-formal education
Published 26.03.12ICDE member institution, the Commonwealth of Learning, has recently published a guide to quality assurance in open and distance non-formal education. The toolkit aims to be a useful resource for non-formal education and training policy makers, programme managers and researchers.
UNESCO World OER Congress update
Published 07.03.12A regional policy forum in preparation for the World OER Congress was held in South Africa in February. Presentations are available online, and a draft version of the Paris Declaration has been published for comments. Registration for the Open Exhibition at the World OER Congress, to be held 20-22 June 2012, is now open.
Webinar on the OER university model
Published 26.03.12The OER university is a collaborative project to provide free learning to all students worldwide using freely available learning materials, and which will enable credible qualifications to be gained from recognized education institutions. James C Taylor from ICDE member institution, the University of Southern Queensland, Australia, presents a video introduction to the concept.
Policy Recommendations for open educational practice
Published 23.03.12The European Foundation for Quality in e-Learning (EFQUEL) has developed a guide for policy makers to explain open educational practice, and make recommendations for how this concept can be embraced by education systems. The publication draws on work carried out by the Open Educational Quality (OPAL) Initiative, in which ICDE was a partner.
