24th ICDE World Conference Fellowship Programme reports
Published 21.11.1116 delegates from countries with developing economies, including a number of students, received sponsorship to take part in the 24th ICDE World Conference. The programme was made possible by the generosity of member institutions, and ICDE both contributed to and administered the scheme. Here we present personal testimony from the recipients on how the experience benefited them personally and their home region.
ICDE and OPAL sessions at Online Educa Berlin conference
Published 02.11.11This annual global e-learning conference takes place in Berlin, Germany on 30 November - 2 December. It will feature a special session organized by ICDE and with participation from member institutions entitled, Learning Cultures: An International Panorama, as well as a session showcasing winners of the OPAL Awards.

Cooperation agreement between ICDE members from China and USA
Published 18.11.11During the 24th ICDE World Conference in October 2011, the Open University of China and the University of Maryland University College, USA signed a cooperation agreement.
Post-conference updates: proceedings and pictures
Published 02.11.11Attended by over 600 delegates representing 49 countries, the 24th World Conference held in Bali, Indonesia in October was a successful and culturally rich event. Indonesian host of the conference, Universitas Terbuka, provided a high calibre programme that gave delegates the opportunity to discuss and explore the future of ODL, and experience the local traditions and warm, Indonesian welcome.
ICDE features in international journal Nature
Published 02.11.11ICDE and President Frits Pannekoek feature in a recent article on online education and science in Nature, the highly-respected weekly international science journal. The article discusses challenges related to the acceptance of online learning for science subjects in higher education.
Recognition and feedback for best open educational practices
Published 18.11.11UNESCO has developed opportunities for practitioners and institutions to gain exposure for and assessment of open educational practices. You are invited to take advantage of these services, which stem from the Open Educational Quality (OPAL) Initiative. ICDE is also engaged in OPAL along with leading European universities.
Policy forum on open educational practices
Published 01.11.11A policy forum on mainstreaming open educational practices in higher education and adult education is to be held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France on 14 November 2011. The policy forum is part of the UNESCO supported Open Educational Quality Initiative (OPAL) and participation is possible either in person or online.
New UNESCO-COL Chair in ODL
Published 18.11.11Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe, Vice-Chancellor of ICDE member institution the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has been named a UNESCO-COL Chair in Open and Distance Learning.
First UNESCO Mobile Learning Week 12-16 December 2011
Published 24.11.11The First UNESCO Mobile Learning Week takes place 12-16 December 2011. An open symposium on mobile learning will also be held on 15-16 December at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France. This will explore how mobile phones can help in the attainment of the Education for All goals.
Rankings and e-learning seminar presentations available
Published 02.11.11ICDE member institution, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) recently hosted its first international seminar on Higher Education Rankings and e-learning. The presentations are now avaiable online from the seminar, which featured a range of international speakers, including ICDE President, Frits Pannekoek and ICDE Board of Trustess member Ingeborg Bo.
Launch of OER Asia
Published 18.11.11ICDE member institution Wawasan Open University, Malaysia, has recently launched an Open Educational Resource forum entitled OER Asia. This site has been created to cultivate an Open Educational Resource community in the Asia region, inspired by a research grant from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada.
Guidelines for OER in Higher Education institutions
Published 18.11.11UNESCO and the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) have recently published a set of guidelines for the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) in higher education. This important document outlines in a concise format the key issues, and provides advice on the integration of OER .
eLearning Africa call for papers
Published 02.11.11eLearning Africa has announced a call for papers for its 2012 conference to take place in Cotonou, Benin from 23-25 May, and focusing on sustainability. As Africa's largest annual conference on education and technology, eLearning Africa provides both an important forum for discussions and a networking opportunity.
