24th ICDE World Conference second call for papers

A second call for papers has been announced for the 24th ICDE World Conference on Open and Distance Learning to be held 2–5 October 2011 on the island of Bali, Indonesia. The submission deadline for abstracts for both papers and posters is 31 March 2011.

ICDE International Conference, Argentina - speakers announced

Universidad Nacional de Quilmes (UNQ), host of the forthcoming ICDE International Conference, has annouced the keynote speakers confirmed to present at the conference on 14-15 April, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Among them is ICDE Executive Committee member and President of the Brazilian Association for Distance Education (ABED), Fredric Litto.

UNESCO announces launch of new online OER Community

UNESCO launches its new online platform, the OER Community, and invites practitioners, researchers, decision and policy-makers, teachers and learners to join and contribute their knowledge on open educational resources. This global social network is committed to supporting the Education for All and Millennium Development Goals through OER.

Open Educational Practices support innovation in learning

The newly published Open Educational Quality Initiative "Beyond OER" study report asked respondents from higher education and adult education to consider whether the use of open educational resources would lead to innovative educational practices. The results show that open educational practices are supported through cultures of innovation and in turn lead to innovation in organizations. Institutions clearly benefit from this two way relationship.

Supporting policies create increased impact for OER

The Open Educational Quality Initiative "Beyond OER" study report is now published. Among its conclusions it finds that OER are more widely used where programmes or inititatives for open resources exist at the institutional level. The lesser the fear, insecurity or discomfort towards Open Educational Resources (OER), the higher the frequency of OER use. The report thus advocates building trust in OER in order to increase their actual usage, and building open learning architectures to transform learning.

The next wave for OER: future learning with open practices

A new report entitled "Beyond OER" will shortly be published by the Open Educational Quality Initiative. It concludes that Open Educational Resources (OER) in higher education institutions are available in principle but are not frequently used. In this first of a series of articles we preview some of the key findings.

Open invitation to OER planning meeting

Post-secondary institutions concerned with promoting the sharing of knowledge and resources to ensure sustainable learning futures are invited to join an open planning meeting on 23 February, 2011. UNESCO will provide support for streaming the meeting on the Internet to enable virtual participation by education leaders and interested persons worldwide.

Open Polytechnic to collaborate with National Institute of Open Schooling, India

World Bank to catalogue ICT and education policies

Open Education: Changing Educational Practices

The latest edition of the online journal elearning papers is dedicated to open education. Edited by Ulf-Daniel Ehlers, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany and Director of the European Foundation for Quality in E-Learning, and Tapio Koskinen of Aalto University School of Science and Technology, Finland, it contains papers demonstrating trends towards greater cultures and practice of openness taking place throughout Europe and beyond.
