ICDE Policy Forum report - barriers and strategies for ODL

Held at the ICDE Standing Conference of Presidents in Pretoria, South Africa in September 2010, the Policy Forum was a first step in ICDE's activities to highlight increasing government actions which restrict the success and impact of open and distance learning. ICDE also seeks to draw attention to how this impacts the UNESCO Education for All goals.

Going Global 2011 - special registration rate for ICDE members

Registration for the fifth Going Global conference is now open and ICDE members are eligible for the discounted 'partner organization’ rate. Organized by the British Council, the conference will be held 10-12 March in Hong Kong, China, and will explore the challenges faced by education providers in the current economic climate.

Invitation to Policy Forum on OER at UNESCO

UNESCO and the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) extend an open invitation to attend a Policy Forum on Open Educational Resources (OER) next month in Paris, France, within the framework of the UNESCO-COL initiative, “Taking OER beyond the OER community: Policy and Capacity”.

UNESCO signs mobile technology agreement

The Open Educational Quality Initiative - an update

The Open Educational Quality (OPAL) Initiative is a partnership between organizations including ICDE and UNESCO which is working to promote quality and innovation in higher and adult education. Workshop on international trends and perspectives in ODE

ICDE was a collaborating partner at the recent European Distance and E-learning Network (EDEN) Research Workshop in Budapest, Hungary. ICDE Secretary General, Carl Holmberg and Narimane Hadj-Hamou, from ICDE member institution Hamdan Bin Mohammed e-University, United Arab Emirates, presented at a session entitled International Trends and Perspectives in ODE.

New President: Asian Association of Open Universities

ICDE extends congratulations to the newly elected President of the Asian Association of Open Universities, Professor Wong Tat Meng. Professor Wong Tat Meng, who is Vice Chancellor of ICDE member institution Wawasan Open University, Malaysia, will assume the position in 2011.

Skills development in Africa

The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) is is working with the Commonwealth Association of Polytechnics in Africa (CAPA) to expand flexible and blended delivery approaches in technical and vocational education and training. COL and CAPA have launched a number of activities aimed at alleviating poverty by increasing access to quality skills development for young people and adults.

Quality and access to ODE in Southern Africa

The Distance Education Association of Southern Africa (DEASA) recently held their 45th Annual General Meeting and Conference in Lilongwe, Malawi. The theme for this year’s conference was Propelling Strategic Novelty for Open and Distance Education in the South African Development Community Region, with the sub-theme, Quality Promotion.

World Bank blog on ICT in education
