Student satisfaction at Open Universiteit Nederland

ICDE member institution Open Universiteit Nederland has been rated top for student satisfaction in a recent national survey, generating increased interest in the potential of distance education in the Netherlands.

According to the National Student Enquiry 2010, students of the Open Universiteit are the most satisfied in the country with their studies. The Open Universiteit was rated significantly higher than the other 13 universities involved in the survey, a rating that was based on feedback regarding the quality of teaching, course content, methodology, and other areas.

ResearchNed, the independent research institute that carried out the survey, interviewed 650,000 higher education students. Commissioned by the foundation Studiekeuze123 (Study Choice 123), the survey is a joint initiative of Dutch institutes of higher education and student organizations, and is financed by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sciences.

The Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Open Universiteit, Theo Bovens commented: "This is a fantastic appreciation of our academic distance education. Our students have high expectations of the quality of our education. They mostly already have working experience, often had the advantage of higher education, frequently combine work and study and they do not receive any student grants. All of this causes them to be very critical of our education. Therefore, the fact that students think we more than meet their expectations, is a big compliment to all our employees."
