24th ICDE World Conference

Hosted by Universitas Terbuka, Indonesia, the 24th ICDE World Conference took place in Nusa Dua on the island of Bali, 2-5 October 2011.

The conference theme was, Expanding horizons – new approaches to ODL, and included the following sub-themes:

  • ODL and human capacity building
  • ODL in a changing world
  • Quality and ODL in the future
  • Management and strategic development of ODL
  • OERs in a global world
  • International development and distance learning

16 delegates from countries with developing economies, including a number of students, received sponsorship to take part in the 24th ICDE World Conference. The programme was made possible by the generosity of member institutions, and ICDE both contributed to and administered the scheme. Attended by over 600 delegates representing 49 countries, the 24th World Conference held in Bali, Indonesia in October was a successful and culturally rich event. Indonesian host of the conference, Universitas Terbuka, provided a high calibre programme that gave delegates the opportunity to discuss and explore the future of ODL, and experience the local traditions and warm, Indonesian welcome.

In October ICDE held its 24th World Conference on the island of Bali, Indonesia. Hosted by ICDE member institution Universitas Terbuka, the conference addressed new approaches to open and distance learning. The power of education to transform lives - access, investment and development.

The International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) held its 24th biennial world conference in collaboration with The Open University (Universitas Terbuka), Indonesia from 2-5 October 2011. The conference, which looked at new approaches to learning, took place on the island of Bali and was attended by over 600 delegates representing 49 countries.

Symposia will be held on ICDE projects on regulatory frameworks for distance education and increasing awareness of the impact of distance education, winners of the ICDE Prize of Excellence will be announced, and a special edition of Open Praxis launched.

ICDE is pleased to announce that the Indonesian Minister of Education, Muhammad Nuh, will be joined by Senior Policy Advisor at the United States Department of Education, Hal Plotkin in the opening plenary of the 24th ICDE World Conference in Bali, Indonesia, 2-5 October. Muhammad Nuh and Hal Plotkin will hold the opening keynote presentations on ODL and Human Capacity Building.

ODL in a Changing World at 24th ICDE World Conference

Open and Distance Learning in a Changing World will be the main focus of the second day of the 24th ICDE World Conference on Open and Distance Learning. ICDE is honoured to welcome keynote speakers Lawrence Lessig, lawyer, activist and founder of Creative Commons, and Duk Hoon Kwak, President and CEO of EBS, Korea to share their knowledge and views on the subject. Registration remains open with fees from USD 400.

Open Educational Resources keynotes and social activities at ICDE World Conference

Day three of the 24th ICDE World Conference will focus on Open Educational Resources (OER). Rory McGreal of Athabasca University, Canada, will join Gráinne Conole from the University of Leicester, UK, for the keynote presentation. A panel discussion will follow with perspectives from China, Latin America, South Africa, and from publishing. The evening gala dinner, lunches and coffee breaks are included in the registration fee.

The Fellowship Programme aims to support delegates from countries with developing economies, as well as students from any region of the world.

The deadline for the submission of full papers for the 24th ICDE World Conference, 2-5 October in Bali, Indonesia, has been extended to 22 August. Host institution Universitas Terbuka is pleased to announce that participants will be able to take advantage of a complementary one-day tour.
