2009 Standing Conference of Presidents declaration

The document summarizes discussions between Rectors, Presidents and other senior executives from fifty universities worldwide, and makes recommendations for how these institutions can contribute to the global economy.

The four key recommendations are that:

  1. Proponents of open, online and distance education must use the current economic crisis as an opportunity both to influence policy and to drive forward innovation in teaching.

  2. The open, online and distance education community must strive to meet the highest expectations with regard to effectiveness, transparency and accountability.

  3. Institutions commit themselves to a deeper understanding of the aspirations of individual students within the needs of the global economy.

  4. Open, online and distance universities will nurture and encourage entrepreneurship to lessen the impact of future economic crises.

Grateful thanks are extended to the SCOP 2009 workshop leaders for their input to the declaration.
