The AAOU Annual Conference, hosted in turn by different member institutions, is a forum for all who are involved in open and distance learning in Asia, particularly academics, administrators, students, and information, communication technology developers and providers. The participants come mainly from Asia but other regions are represented as well.

The 19th Annual Conference of the AAOU was held in Jakarta, Indonesia on September 15 - 17, 2005. The theme of the conference was “Building Knowledge-based Society trough Open and Distance Education”. The conference addressed issues relating to the role of open and distance education in changing educational paradigms, the promotion of education for all, the management of distance education and the public ownership of distance education.  

The ICDE Secretary General and CEO, was asked to give a keynote speech at the AAOU Conference in Jakarta. He gave a presentation on "Quality and Capacity building in Open and Distance Learning" LINK to speech.
